James Bret Davis, 62, of Bellmead passed away Saturday, September 11, 2021 surrounded by family.

The family invites visitors to stop by Bellmead Funeral Home from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Thursday, September 16, 2021 to give your condolences and say your goodbyes.

Bret was born to Bodie and Ivy Davis on July 14, 1959 in Waco, Texas. He graduated from Temple High School in 1977. During his early adult years his love for music allowed him to travel, running lights or doing security for bands all over the world. After some time on the road he came back to Waco, Texas where he settled and embraced life.

Bret was known by many names, Dad, Pappaw and one of his favorites, Coach. If you asked him about his children, he would say he had 2 daughters by birth, but many boys he considered sons from his many years of coaching football in the community of Bellmead for the La Vega Pirates Little League and helping out through their school aged years. He also loved coaching baseball and softball through La Vega Little League as well. He loved the Pirate community and spent many Thursday, Friday and Saturday's on the field or cooking on the sidelines for his fellow pirate fans. Even after both children had graduated, he continued to cheer the pirates on faithfully every Friday night, finally, although difficult, as a fan rather than a coach.

Following his years of work and coaching, he found love once again with Mary. He spent his days with her cooking, camping and sitting on his front porch with a cup of coffee.

Bret enjoyed his time here with his family and friends. He was dearly loved and will be missed by so many.

Bret was preceded in death by both his parents and grandparents.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; his children, Tiffany Long and her husband, Dru and Shannon Ciera Futch and her husband, Johnathon; his stepchildren, Candice Cationand Catie Phillips and her husband, Brandon; and his grandchildren, Jordynn, Cayden, Caleb and Maverick.

Flowers may be sent to the funeral home.

San and I remember Bret with fondness from his days running lights for David Zychek and the Groove Kings. He was very meticulous about his work and the Groove Kings enjoyed working with him. Bret always had a big smile on his face and he truly loved rock music, especially with loud guitars! Rest in Peace Bret. We know you are catching up with Zychek and all the other great guitarists up there!

I'm so sorry your gone my friend. Ever since we were little and didn't get to see each other that often, when we did we all had so much fun. Me you Richard Jan & Vickie. Sometimes we even had Connie Linda and Ricky to run around playing hind and seek and doing things kids do. I loved keeping up with you all these years, still wished we had seen each other more. I'm glad your in no more pain and once again with your Mom and Dad and all the family that has gone on before us. Your always loved and not forgotten.
